Inquiry team from int'l boxing body to start two-day probe

SEOUL, July 7 (Yonhap) -- A group of monitors from an international boxing agency
will conduct a two-day probe this week into allegations that South Korean boxers
intentionally fudged their weigh-ins at a competition last April, officials here
said Tuesday.
The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) banned players and staff of
the Korean Amateur Boxing Federation (KABF) in May from participating in
international competitions after the allegations were raised.
The South Korean team is also accused of sending an unregistered team doctor to a
competition.
"The inquiry team will carry out the investigation for two days from July 8-9,"
an official said.
The AIBA demanded closed-door interviews with the players, coaches and judges
implicated in the weigh-in allegations, according to the official.
The sport's governing body, however, rejected KABF's request to be able to
participate in the probe, the official said.
The KABF needs to be cleared of the allegations in order to be able to compete in
the World Championship in Italy in September.
