Al Hamer: Responsible use of AI essential to support society

Kuwait, May 12 (BNA): Nabeel bin Yacoub Al Hamer, His Majesty the King's Advisor for Media Affairs, participated in the first session of the second day of the Arab Media Forum in the State of Kuwait. The session, moderated by former Kuwaiti Information Minister Sami Al Nisf, discussed credibility and information verification within the context of artificial intelligence.

He highlighted that AI is a new development that, like any novelty, raises questions and debate. He underscored the need for responsible and conscious use of AI, with a focus on leveraging it to serve the interests of society.

Al Hamer said that the current debate around AI is similar to what occurred during the emergence of the internet, which was initially met with scepticism and even described by some as an "intelligence tool", but later proved its effectiveness and contributed to professional and practical life.

Al Hamer emphasised that AI is a supportive tool that should be used without fear or exaggeration. He noted that such technologies do not replace the human role but rather enhance mental and cognitive abilities and contribute to higher productivity.

On his part, Dr. Mohammed Al Enezi, Professor of Science at the College of Basic Education in Kuwait, warned of the challenges posed by AI technologies, stating that they not only threaten the human role but also impact skills, as people gradually lose abilities reliant on manual intervention.

He added that while some advantages exist, challenges remain, particularly the risk of embedded biases in some AI programmes.

Dr. Mohamed Binhuwaidin, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in the United Arab Emirates, said AI now undermines many professions. However, he noted that technology cannot be resisted or allowed to control us fully, calling for a balanced approach to its use.

He added that Gulf countries are well positioned to face AI challenges efficiently, but this requires preparing a generation capable of critical and creative thinking and promoting a culture of data verification. He also highlighted the need for local, regional, and international legislation to regulate AI use.

Dr. Binhuwaidin emphasised the importance of education institutions in supporting teachers and equipping them to teach skills that AI cannot transfer to students.

Faisal Al Ali, Enterprise Risk Management Department Manager at Zain Kuwait, underlined the importance of social responsibility in dealing with AI technologies. He called for careful use of such technologies, especially by companies and institutions, and emphasised the need to protect customer data and avoid sharing it with AI applications.

Al Ali highlighted the urgent need for regulatory and legislative frameworks to govern the use of AI in a way that safeguards privacy and ensures information security.
