Wu, Nakasone agree 5 nations should cooperate on N. Korean issues
+
TOKYO, July 10 Kyodo -
Visiting Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei and Japanese Foreign Minister
Hirofumi Nakasone agreed Friday on the importance of cooperation among the five
countries involved in the six-way talks with North Korea to denuclearize the
nation, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said Friday.
While noting that the six-party talks aimed at ending North Korea's nuclear
ambitions is the most ''realistic framework'' to deal with issues concerning
the North, Nakasone stressed to the chairman of the multilateral talks the need
for ''steady cooperation'' between Japan, China, South Korea, the United
States, and Russia.
The six-party talks have been stalled since December over ways to verify
Pyongyang's nuclear activities.
Nakasone also told Wu there is no change in Japan's stance of seeking a
comprehensive resolution of the nuclear and missile issues as well as North
Korea's past abduction of Japanese nationals.
Wu, meanwhile, said that China would never accept North Korea's possession of
nuclear weapons and that it is important that the five countries jointly make
efforts to realize North Korea's denuclearization, the official said.
Wu is visiting Japan as part of a four-nation trip which has already taken him
to Russia and the United States. He will head to South Korea after leaving
Japan on Sunday.
