DOCUMENTATION ON MALAYSIAN FIRST PM'S MEMORABILIA FOR CABINET

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) -- The documentation of the contents of a
safe belonging to Malaysia's first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra would
be presented next week to the Cabinet before public viewing, said National
Archives director-general Sidek Jamil.

The contents comprise 46 personal memorabilia, believed to have been given
to Tunku Abdul Rahman, by local and foreign leaders of his era.

"We will inform the Cabinet on the memorabilia which will be displayed,"
he told reporters after officiating the upgraded version of the National
Archives' portal.

Among the items discovered in the safe were two sets of cufflings, a wrist
watch, two golden keys (one of which was from former New York City mayor Robert
Wagner who served from 1953 to 1965), a gold coin with a ringgit value from the
fourth Malaysian Supreme King Tuanku Ismail Nasiruddin Shah, a commemorative
coin from the first Taiwan president Chiang Kai-Shek and a 1970-dated golden
plaque from the National Shooting Association.

Sidek said the plan to exhibit the collection should be carried out
vigilantly, with consideration to safety, adding that a suitable venue be found.

Last week, Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim
revealed the contents.

The safe was displayed at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Memorial after much
speculation on its contents.

The safe was used by Tunku Abdul Rahman when he was chief minister of
the Federation of Malaya and later, as prime minister.

It was initially placed in his office at the Residency before being moved to
his residence at No: 1, Jalan Langgak Tunku when he retired in 1970.

The safe was then handed over to the National Archives to be placed again at
the Residency in 1994, by his son, Tunku Ahmad Nerang, as part of the nation's
artefacts.
