1909 -- The Joseon Dynasty is forced to sign an agreement to turn over its
judicial power to Japan, which colonized the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945.

1948 -- The National Assembly approves South Korea's first Constitution,
upholding a Western-style democracy and capitalist market economy. The same year,
a communist government is set up in the northern half of the Korean peninsula
under the tutelage of the Soviet Union.

1950 -- President Rhee Syngman transfers the South Korean military's operational
command to General Douglas MacArthur, commander of the United Nations forces,
during the Korean War.

1971 -- Seoul and Washington launch the first defense ministerial talks, called
the Security Consultative Meeting.

1980 -- A martial law command arrests opposition leader Kim Dae-jung and eight
others for allegedly instigating a rebellion. The military government led by Chun
Doo-hwan orders Kim to be put to death but later commutes the sentence to life
imprisonment. Kim won the Nobel Peace Prize during his presidency in 2000 for his
reconciliation efforts with North Korea and fight for democracy.

1982 -- South Korea and Australia sign a treaty to avoid double taxation.

1998 -- A North Korean spy wearing a diving suit and an oxygen tank is found dead
on the east coast in Gangwon Province. Other belongings found with the body were
a Czech-made machine gun, a hand grenade, a knife and communication equipment.

2005 -- The South Korean Navy launches its first multipurpose transportation
vessel, the Dokdo, at the shipyard of Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co.
The vessel is capable of controlling air, sea and land operations and serves as a
light aircraft carrier.

2008 -- Six-party talks held in Beijing release a press communique that North
Korea finishes disabling of its main nuclear facilities by October, and its
dialogue partners, South Korea, the U.S., Japan, China, and Russia, complete
promised energy aid for the communist country in return.
