Foreign Minister underscores Bahrain’s vision for global peace

New York, June 3 (BNA): Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended a reception held at the United Nations Headquarters for the five candidate countries nominated for non-permanent membership in the Security Council, namely, the Kingdom of Bahrain; the Republic of Colombia; the Democratic Republic of the Congo; the Republic of Latvia; and the Republic of Liberia.
Dr. Al Zayani highlighted Bahrain’s consistent diplomatic approach under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and with the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
The minister underscored that Bahrain’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council reflects its strong commitment to multilateralism and its deep belief in the power of collective action to bring about meaningful change.
Dr. Al Zayani emphasised that Bahrain has long pursued a balanced foreign policy that promotes dialogue, builds consensus, and seeks practical solutions in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world. He said that, if elected, Bahrain would continue to advocate for global peace and unity and would work constructively across regions and cultures to build alliances, confront shared challenges, and uphold the rule of international law.
The minister added that Bahrain would prioritise ensuring that the voices of Arab, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries are heard and respected within the Council. Particular attention would be given to promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, especially in Gaza, through supporting efforts to achieve a ceasefire, ensure the release of hostages and detainees, and facilitate humanitarian assistance and reconstruction.
Dr. Al Zayani noted that Bahrain would also focus on several key priorities, including strengthening cybersecurity to counter digital threats, enhancing maritime security to safeguard critical trade routes and combat piracy, underscoring its commitment to counterterrorism and cutting off terrorist financing, and advocating for greater inclusion of women and youth in international decision-making processes.
The minister further underscored Bahrain’s commitment to education as a pillar of peace and a tool to counter extremism, particularly among youth affected by conflict, an area of focus at the Bahrain Summit hosted by the Kingdom in May 2024.
Dr. Al Zayani emphasised Bahrain’s understanding of the vital role the Security Council plays in addressing global conflicts and challenges. He highlighted that the Kingdom would be a sincere, constructive, and engaged partner, working to strengthen the Council’s effectiveness in facing current and future challenges. Dr Al Zayani also extended his best wishes for success to all the candidate countries in the upcoming election and throughout their potential terms on the Council.
The reception was attended by Ambassador Jamal Faris Al Ruwaie, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, and Ambassador Saeed Abdul Khaliq Saeed, Director of the Coordination and Follow-up.
