Samsung Electronics tops LCD TV sales in Southeast Asia
SEOUL, July 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics Co.
became the top seller of liquid crystal display televisions (LCD TV) in Southeast
Asia in the first five months of this year, a market report showed Monday.
In terms of LCD TV sales, Samsung Electronics had the largest market shares in
six Southeast Asian countries -- Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the
Philippines and Singapore -- in the January-May period, according to market
research firm GfK.
Samsung's market share was 36 percent in Vietnam, 38 percent in the Philippines,
36 percent in Thailand, 28 percent in Indonesia, 22 percent in Malaysia and 27.8
percent in Singapore.
Samsung has been particularly active in Vietnam, where its market share has seen
month-on-month increases, reaching up to 44 percent in May.
In Thailand, the largest TV market in Southeast Asia, Samsung widened the gap to
10 percentage points ahead of its closest competitor, according to GfK.
Despite a severe recession, Southeast Asia is one of the fastest growing LCD TV
markets, Samsung said.
