NCST honoured by ITU at WSIS+20 High Level Event

Geneva, July 8 (BNA): The HH Shaikh Nasser Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Centre, the research and development arm of the Nasser Centre for Science and Technology (NCST), was honoured at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2025, organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialised agency of the United Nations, and held in Switzerland.

The Centre was recognised for its project, the "Machine Learning Platform," in the category of leading global initiatives under the "E-environment" field.

The project was selected among 90 initiatives out of 973 global entries, reflecting Bahrain’s advanced position in leveraging AI technologies in support of sustainable development.

The project stood out for its practical impact on enhancing environmental resource management and for its use of real-time data to build intelligent models supporting strategic decision-making in energy, water, and waste sectors. These efforts are in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the action lines of the WSIS.

Dr. Abdullah bin Nasser Al Noaimi, Chief Executive Officer of NCST, said that the recognition reflects Bahrain’s national vision to embrace future technologies.

He attributed the achievement to the continued support of the Kingdom’s leadership and the directives of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, His Majesty the King’s Representative for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs and Chairman of the Centre’s Board of Trustees, who has supported the use of AI in advancing sustainable development goals.

Dr. Al Noaimi underscored that the Centre has adopted a strategic approach to harness AI as a key enabler of competitiveness and comprehensive development.

He added that the Centre remains committed to innovation in developing practical solutions to environmental challenges and will continue its efforts to position Bahrain as a regional and global leader in high-impact technological initiatives.

This achievement aligns with the Centre’s strategic vision to place Bahrain at the forefront of artificial intelligence by strengthening research and development, fostering an advanced scientific environment, and deploying emerging technologies to build a more sustainable and innovative future.
