S. Korea posts record trade surplus in June

SEOUL, July 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korea posted a record trade surplus in June as
imports fell more than exports amid a protracted global recession, a government
report showed Monday.

According to the report by the Korea Customs Service, South Korea's trade surplus
amounted to US$7.27 billion last month, marking the largest surplus since related
data started to be compiled in 1952.
It is the fifth consecutive month of surpluses since February, the report showed.
The June figure brought the nation's cumulative surplus for the first half of
this year to $28 billion.
The surplus comes as imports declined sharper than overseas shipments. Exports
fell 12.4 percent last month from a year earlier to $32.63 billion, while imports
plunged 32.9 percent over the same period to $25.36 billion, according to the
report.
