Govt promotes small scale hydropower development

(KPL) Lao government has a plan to exert its effort in the development of small scale hydropower projects in Laos, aiming to increase the revenue of the country by using the existing potential resources.
Deputy Director of Electricity Department, Dr Daovong Phonekeo said that the electricity sector is very important for socio-economic development and a large resource of state revenue, especially poverty alleviation.
Dr Daovong added that hydropower development projects in the country are not big if compared to the neighbouring countries.
It showed that 50 per cent of population have accessed to the electricity, he said.The plan was discussed at a meeting of Ministry of Energy and Mines on 8 July at Lao Plaza Hotel where they discussed ways how to promote investment in small and medium size hydropower projects in Laos.
Laos is a potential country in hydropower development with a total generation capacity of 26,000 – 30,000 MW, of this figure was just only 5 per cent has been developed, he said.
Many hydropower development potentials in Laos request more investment.
He believed that the government could invest in development of small hydropower plants to supply the electricity in the country.
The Government expected to supply more than 60 per cent of electricity to rural areas at the end of this year and 90 per cent by 2020.
