S. Korea to hold Latin American festival

SEOUL, July 13 (Yonhap) -- Music, dance, art and films of Latin America will be
showcased during a three-week festival in South Korea as part of government
efforts to increase exchanges between contemporary cultural scenes of the two
regions, local organizers said Monday.
Running from Friday through Aug. 8, the Latin American Cultural Festival will
invite local audiences to an art exhibition of 27 artists from 16 Latin American
countries, special screenings of 31 Latin American films, and performances by
teams of Columbia, Peru, Chile and Uruguay, officials at the Korea Foundation and
the foreign ministry said in a press conference, the sponsors of the events.
The festival will also be held in other major South Korean cities of Busan and
Jeonju. Those who make reservations through the Internet
(cafe.naver.com/latinamericanfest) will be admitted for free.
"We hope the festival will play a role in expanding locals' interest in Latin
American culture and society, ultimately helping enhance friendship and
understanding between the two regions," Cho Dae-sik, head of the foreign
ministry's culture affairs bureau, said.
The "Borderless Generation: Contemporary Art of Latin America" will be held at
the Korean Foundation Cultural Center Galleries in central Seoul, with paintings
and artworks of veteran and emerging Latin American artists including Oscar
Amador Montes, Joao Paulo Barbosa, Felipe Cama and Nayari Castillo on display.
The "Special Screenings of Latin American Films" will present a rare chance for
local film buffs to see movies by talented auteurs from 13 countries including
Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, Ecuador and Brazil.
The listed movies include "Two Sons of Francisco" by Brazilian duo Zeze and
Luciano, "The Strategy of the Snail," portraying the tough life of tenants on the
outskirts of a city in Columbia, and "How Much Further?" depicting the friendship
between a Spanish traveler and an Ecuadorian student. All films will be subtitled
in Korean.
Music and dance performances will be presented by Colombia's "Carnaval de
Barranquilla," Uruguay's "Passarella Duo" and Chile's "All Ways Surprising."
Culture experts from Korea and Latin America will also hold joint forums from
July 27 through Aug. 1 on art, pop culture, food and sports.
