AT LEAST 10 KILLED SINCE 2007 AT DELHI METRO WORK SITE

By P. Vijian

NEW DELHI, July 13 (Bernama) -- At least 10 people have died since 2007 at
the Delhi Metro worksites in the capital, including six people who were crushed
to death Sunday.

According to local newspaper reports on Sunday morning six workers were
killed and 15 others injured when an overhead concrete bridge under construction
gave way, making it the worst tragedy.

Clearing of the debris continue at the worksite but construction of the
metro link would be stalled for another three months, the reports said.

The 20km stretch connects the capital's Central Secretariat to Badarpur, a
thriving residential locale, which is part of the 127 km second phase of the
Delhi Metro project.

It was scheduled to be completed by September 2010, a month before the Delhi
Commonwealth Games.

The flyover is being constructed by Gammon India. The losses due to the
incident was estimated to cost about RM6 million

This is the second worksite accident within nine months.

In October last year, two people were killed while 30 others injured when a
crane trying to place concrete slabs collapsed.

The metro project is being built and operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corp
Limited (DMRC) and works started in 1995.
