S. Korea, Sweden sign agreement on military information protection

By Byun Duk-kun
STOCKHOLM, July 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and Sweden signed an agreement Monday
on the protection of classified military information, advancing cooperation
between their armed forces and defense industries.
The agreement was signed by the countries' foreign ministers on the sidelines of
a summit held here between South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Swedish Prime
Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.
"Following the signing of the military information protection treaty, various
other agreements will also be signed, including treaties on education,
information and goods that will help increase practical exchange in the defense
sector," Seoul's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said in a statement.
Sweden is the eighth nation to forge such a military treaty with South Korea.
Others include the United States, Russia, France, Canada and Australia.
"The treaty is expected to help expand our cooperation with Sweden in the defense
and military sectors, including in the defense industry and peacekeeping
operations," the statement said.
The South Korean president arrived here Saturday as part of his three-nation trip
that also took him to Poland and Italy last week. He will head home later Monday.
