European Roller Stops over at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve during Autumn Migration

Rafha, August 19, 2025, SPA -- The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve is currently a stopover point for the European roller (Coracias garrulus) during its regular autumn migration. The bird crosses Saudi airspace on its long journey between breeding grounds and wintering areas, a passage that reflects the rich biodiversity hosted by the reserve.
The European roller is among the most beautiful migratory birds that cross the Kingdom twice a year, in both spring and autumn migrations. It is distinguished by its vivid colors, blending light blue and turquoise with touches of brown on its wings, creating a striking appearance that fascinates bird enthusiasts and photographers alike.
The bird measures between 29 and 32 centimeters in length and weighs between 100 and 170 grams. It produces sharp calls resembling those of a crow and feeds mainly on large insects and small vertebrates, making it an active part of the ecological balance and contributing to pest control in agricultural areas.
A remarkable image captured the bird perched on the branches of acacia trees in the reserve during its autumn stopover. Its vibrant colors, harmonizing with the greenery, created a vivid natural scene that highlights the reserve’s importance as a sanctuary and habitat for migratory birds.
Environmental experts affirm that the presence of the European roller in the reserve demonstrates the success of national efforts to protect wildlife and preserve migratory bird pathways. This aligns with the Kingdom’s objectives to safeguard biodiversity and ensure ecosystem sustainability.
