Renewal process – foundation for Vietnam to achieve development goals by 2050

Moscow (VNA) – The Doi Moi (Renewal) process launched in 1986 marked a major milestone in Vietnam’s 80-year development path, helping the country secure impressive socio-economic achievements, said Valeria Vershinina, Deputy Director of the ASEAN Centre at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).

In an interview with Vietnam News Agency correspondents in Moscow, she highlighted the country’s stable economic growth, with per capita GDP nearly doubling and the poverty rate dropping sharply to below 3%. Access to healthcare has been ensured, mortality rates have fallen, and life expectancy has increased, she noted.

According to Vershinina, Vietnam has also made progress in ensuring human rights, paying greater attention to environmental protection, safeguarding the rights of ethnic minorities, and promoting gender equality.

She underlined that Vietnam gives top priority to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and has made concrete progress in this regard. The Government attaches great importance to green energy development and has attracted significant investment and foreign partners in the field. In terms of the number of projects and existing capacity, Vietnam is among the leading Southeast Asian countries in renewable energy exploitation.

The expert also highlighted Vietnam’s increased contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and its active participation in the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. National strategies are also being formulated to protect marine, ocean, and island ecosystems.

By fulfilling its commitments, Vietnam will be able to further improve living standards, enhance environmental conditions, and achieve its ultimate goal of becoming a developed, high-income country by 2050, Vershinina stressed./.
