Almaty, July 15, 2009 (Khabar) - Almaty is now staging the 18th Kazakhstan Parachute Open Championship organised by the Republic’s Defence Ministry. Civil citizens can also take part in the contest. As a result 57 athletes from various regions of the country showed their skills in landing. Four parachute teams jumped out of a Mi Mikolyan 171 military helicopter at the altitude of 1200 metres. The helicopter was flying around the airfield letting each team jump out one by one.
The Ministry’s team is the basis of the country’s national side and half of it is women. All team members have done hundreds of parachute jumps. As a result, the Republic’s team has won 308 medals including 83 gold ones.
Leonid Dudkin, chief, parachute team, Kazakhstan Defence Ministry:
- The contest is sponsored by our armed forces and the Republican budget. We are having this competition today thanks to the Republic’s Armed forces administration.
The Republic’s army maintains and supports the country’s parachuting. A total of 57 parachute jumpers took part in the competition from all over Kazakhstan. The most promising athletes will later represent the country at different Asian contests abroad.
