Summer School For Energy Regulators In ASEAN Key Step In Boosting Regional Regulatory Capacity
PUTRAJAYA, Sept 22 (Bernama) -- The Summer School for Energy Regulators in ASEAN marks a significant step in strengthening regional regulatory capacity, supporting the development of the ASEAN Power Grid, and advancing ASEAN’s collective energy transition goals, said Energy Commission (ST) chief executive officer Siti Safinah Salleh.
Highlighting the theme of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, the chairman of the ASEAN Energy Regulators Network 2025 said in a statement that ST, as coordinator and host of the programme, remains committed to strengthening regional cooperation and equipping ASEAN regulators and utilities with the expertise to drive a safe, sustainable, and inclusive energy future.
The programme was officiated by Siti Safinah, on behalf of Chief Secretary to the Malaysian Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, who is also the ST chairman.
ST said the programme, taking place from Sept 22 to 26 at the PETRONAS Leadership Centre, Selangor, was the first of its kind in the region, following the Summer School on Regulation model held each year in Florence, Italy.
The programme was held in collaboration with the Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, with support from the Florence School of Regulation (FSR), the European University Institute, the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) and the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE).
“The five-day training brings together 35 mid-level professional officers from regulatory and utility bodies across ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste,” the statement said.
According to ST, the programme aims to strengthen regulatory capacity, promote the sharing of best practices, and prepare for the establishment of the ASEAN School of Regulation.
“The programme involves sessions with subject-matter experts, case studies, group exercises and site visits, focusing on cross-border energy trade, market integration, renewable energy deployment and regulatory harmonisation across the ASEAN region,” it said.
