M`SIAN COMPANIES URGED TO TAP MEXICO`S US$300 BLN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

PETALING JAYA, July 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysian corporations have been urged
to tap "big" infrastructure projects being undertaken by the Mexican government.

"The Mexican government is investing around US$300 billion for new airports,
seaports, highways, and we are inviting Malaysian corporations to join us," its
Ambassador to Malaysia, Jorge Alberto Lozoya said Tuesday.

He was speaking to reporters after the opening of a photography exhibition
on "Mexico Land of Colours", here Tuesday.

Lozoya said that bilateral trade between Malaysia and Mexico was very
important as Malaysia was its main partner in South East Asia.

According to Lozoya, Mexico imported computer equipment worth US$2 billion
and furniture valued at US$500 million from Malaysia last year.

Bilateral trade between the two countries amounted to US$4 billion last
year.

Lozoyo said that while the country was looking forward to more trade with
Malaysia, it was also looking to core investments from Malaysian corporations on
big infrastructure projects.

He said Mexico was also inviting investments and cooperation in the
electronics and automobile industries while offering opportunities in the food,
steel, and parts and components manufacturing facilities.

Lozoya said that the Deputy Foreign Minister of Mexico will be in Malaysia
next month to see how Malaysia could tap Mexico's regional market arrangements
such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta).

He will also look into Mexico's interest to see more investments from
Malaysia.

The Mexican economy is highly diversified. Valued at more than US$1 trillion
the country ranks as the 12th largest economy in the world. Its foreign trade
amounts to more than US$500 billion.

Lozoya said that the Mexican government was preparing specific incentives
packages that will interest Malaysian investments, adding that there were
Malaysian companies involved in several sectors but not in infrastructure.

He said Mexico also planned to expand its tourism sector, and that it was
important to have Malaysian hotels in Mexico.

He added that Mexico admired Malaysian hotels not only for their
architecture, but their management as well.

Lozoya also called on for more Malaysians to visit the country and celebrate
its 200 years of Independance next year.

The embassy is working with the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel
Agents (MATTA) and travel agencies to increase the number of Malaysian visitors.

The exhibition meanwhile is being held at the 1 Utama shopping complex here.
It features the work of Mexican photographer Ricardo Espinosa. About 30
photographs, displaying the diversity of Mexico's landscape and cultural
heritage, are being showcased.
