DUSHANBE, October 9. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, agreed during a phone call on October 7 to hold a meeting, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
The Russian presidential spokesman described the conversation as "constructive and positive."
Aliyev phoned Putin to congratulate him on his 73rd birthday on Tuesday. The phone call was the first conversation between the two leaders after a six-month hiatus in meetings.
Later on Thursday, the two presidents will hold talks in Dushanbe. Putin is making a state visit to the Tajik capital to attend a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), among other things.
The meeting will be Putin and Aliyev’s first since October 2024 when the two leaders also met on the sidelines of a session of the Council of Heads of State of the CIS. Also, the Russian president noted he and Aliyev exchanged "a couple of words" during a recent summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in China’s Tianjin.
