Hajj Research Forum Showcases Waste-to-Energy Project to Serve Pilgrims

Madinah, October 09, 2025, SPA -- The Forum for Hajj, Umrah and Visit Research, held in Madinah, unveiled several innovative projects aimed at enhancing pilgrims’ experiences and improving service quality in the holy sites and Makkah through advanced technologies.
Among the scientific studies and innovative research presented was a project designed to promote sustainable waste management in the holy sites by converting waste into energy through advanced combustion technologies. The initiative seeks to reduce waste volumes while generating electricity and water to serve pilgrims.
The study, conducted by a team of six Saudi academic researchers led by Dr. Mustafa Hussein Al-Maddah, showed the potential to process 20,000 tons of solid waste and 550 tons of sludge per day, producing 12,546 megawatt-hours of electricity and recovering 22 million liters of water. The project could also reduce waste volume by up to 90% through intelligent monitoring systems that support the circular economy, aligning with the goals of the Saudi Vision 2030 and positioning the Two Holy Mosques as a global model for sustainable management.
