VITAL FOR ASEAN AND CHINA TO ADDRESS ECONOMIC CRISIS
KUALA LUMPUR, JULY 16 (Bernama) -- It is vital for ASEAN and China to work hand in hand in adressing the recent economic crisis, which has slowed economic growth for both since last year.
Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat said one way, is, to accelerate ASEAN-China
business cooperation.
"This year's conference on ASEAN-China is indeed timely as we are
confronted with many challenges arising from the current financial crisis.
"In a world of globalisation, we can no longer be immune to the global
economic downturn," he said in his speech at the opening of the 4th Conference
on ASEAN-China People to People Friendship Organisations (CACPPFO) at the Putra
World Trade Centre (PWTC) here Thursday.
Ong said the ASEAN-China friendship organisations had identified five
priority sectors, namely, economic and trade, culture and tourism, education and
public health as well as sport and youth for future expansion of cooperation.
He said the establishment of ASEAN-China Free Trade has provided a sound
basis for the business communities in both areas to interact and intensify
collaborative initiatives.
He further added that some aspects required further attention, including
enhancing networking between private sectors, and the need to build better
communication skills.
"I call upon the friendship associations to arrange more frequent
promotional activities in order to create awareness among our business
communities and enhance networking.
"Besides, the friendship associations could also help to disseminate
information on business and trade opportunities, incentives and relevant
regulations through websites and publications," he said.
Ong said since the opening of the dialogue process between ASEAN and China
in 1991, relations between the two parties had made remarkable progress, from
the removal of suspicions to the commencement of dialogue, moving on to
enhancement of mutual trust and finally arriving at the strategic partnership.
He said the close relationship was reflected in the extensive cooperation
that covers many different sectors including politics, economy and security and
social, which was attributed to the strong political will of its leaders and
the joint efforts of all sectors of community.
Also present was the president of the Malaysia-China Friendship Association
Abdul Majid Ahmad Khan and president of the China-ASEAN Association, Gu
Xiulian.
