IMPORTANT TO IDENTIFY BEST STRATEGIES TO UPGRADE NATIONAL EDUCATION

PUTRAJAYA, July 16 (Bernama) -- The government's priority now is to upgrade and find the best approaches and strategies to enhance educational excellence in the country, Muhyiddin Yassin said Thursday.

The deputy prime minister said the policies, strategies and practices to be
implemented should constantly be reviewed for their suitability and
effectiveness and improvements should be made periodically, including in terms
of pedagogy and curriculum.

"We must ensure that our curriculum is constantly updated and relevant to
the desired objective which is to produce quality human capital," he said at the
presentation of excellent service awards to staff of the Education Ministry
here.

Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said this included the English
language curriculum which needed to be bolstered in line with the strategy to
strengthen the learning of the English language which the government would
embark on in 2012.

"We must ensure that students in the country, both in the urban and rural
areas, can master the English language well after going through the national
education system. As such, our education system must offer the best methods to
achieve this objective," he said.

He said that as the country's education managers, the ministry staff must
always be proactive, responsive and ready to tackle change by drafting policies
and strategies that met the current needs.

"With the rapid changes in the global education field, we must not be
satisfied with the existing approaches and strategies.

"We must constantly study and improve the planning of education policies and
strategies to ensure that the education system in our country is at the top
level," he said.

Muhyiddin added that in improving the national education curriculum, the
ministry always welcomed the views of educationists and professional groups,
both within and outside the country.

Among the most important values that the ministry staff must have were
commitment and dedication in implementing the policies which the government had
crafted for the good of the people, he said.

"As civil servants, it is the duty of the Education Ministry staff to whole-
heartedly implement all policies set by the government.

"Every policy has been decided through careful consideration, taking into
account the interests of the people. The success of the policies and their
benefits to the people can only be realised if the civil servants implement the
policies with full commitment," he added.
