S. Korea's new car registration jumps 46.8 pct in June

SEOUL, July 16 (Yonhap) -- Registration of new cars in South Korea soared 46.8
percent in June from a year ago as consumers rushed to buy vehicles before a
government tax benefit expired, industry data showed Thursday.
Drivers in South Korea registered 150,794 new cars last month, compared with
102,721 units for the same month a year earlier, according to statistics released
by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association.
Until the end of June, the government slashed the consumption tax on new vehicles
by 30 percent to spur demand.
But registration of new cars fell 4.9 percent to 669,335 units in the first six
months of this year, the data showed.
