Seoul to increase 'international taxis' for foreign visitors
SEOUL, July 16 (Yonhap) -- The Seoul city government will increase the number of
specialized cabs for foreigners, which have been steadily gaining popularity
since their launch in May, officials said Thursday.
The capital currently operates 120 "international taxis," with 240 drivers
selected through English and Japanese proficiency tests. Officials say the city
will add 100 more cabs next month.
The taxis are slightly more expensive than regular cabs, with a 20 percent
surcharge added on top of the normal metered fare, which begins at 2,400 won
(US$2).
The service has been gaining in popularity, with average daily reservations
rising from 14.8 in May to 24.8 this month, according to the city government.
The most frequent use was to and from airports, followed by sightseeing and
transportation for business purposes.
"Survey results show that international taxis have satisfied both the drivers and
the passengers," a city official said. "We will continue to strengthen
regulations on drivers, such as license cancellation if they violate their
contract."
The city will distribute pamphlets advertising the service at venues frequented
by foreigners, including hotels, airline offices and embassies, and through the
hosts of international events, officials said.
