World Ecotourism Conference 2009 opened in Vientiane

(KPL) The World Ecotourism Conference 2009 was officially opened in Vientiane on 15 July under theme “ Paradigms and Resilience for Sustainable and Responsible Tourism in Developing Countries”.
Mr. Bouasone Bouphavanh, Prime Minister of Laos, Mr. Eugenio Yunio, Acting President of the World Tourism Authority and senior officials from the tourism authority around the world attended at the conference, totaling 300.
The WEC2009 aims to provide a stage for trade and technical exchanges between the governments, academia, NGOs and tourism trade pertaining to best practices and technologies for the advancement of the ecotourism sector through macro and micro management of nature conservation, environment protection, preservation of ethnic communities, sustainable and responsible tourism, impacts of climate change and environment degradation.
It aims to attract both proponents and practitioners - government officials, environment managers, researchers, academicians as well as all those in the tourism trade from eco-lodge operators and eco-tour operators to eco-enthusiasts.
WEC2009 is organised by Lao National Tourism Administration (LNTA) and DISCOVERYMICE based in Malaysia.
The topics highlighted new strategies and applications, innovative capacity building and management, global networking through new media technologies as well as unprecedented public-private sector cooperation as a means to a resilient industry.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Bouasone Bouphavanh said that the event would facilitate business deals, networking, promotion of new products and services, and the spread of knowledge on innovative approaches to the ecotourism sector which is growing very rapidly both in Southeast Asia and the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS).
He added that the Lao government is promoting the role of tourism in the evolving process of regional development, economic integration, investment and commerce in the GMS and Asean regions.
He said with the supportive policies of the Lao government, the Lao tourism industry has experienced very impressive growth over the past decade.
From 2000-2008, the average annual growth in arrivals had exceeded 20 percent, with the number of tourists increasing from approximately 700,000 in 2000 to 1.7 million in 2008.
