Thailand Suspends Joint Peace Declaration with Cambodia Amid Border Tensions

BANGKOK, Nov 11 (TNA) - Thailand's National Security Council (NSC) has voted to indefinitely suspend its joint peace declaration with Cambodia and halt the repatriation of prisoners of war, citing unacceptable injuries to Thai troops and violations of sovereignty.

The decision, made at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, was prompted by the recent casualties and the discovery of landmine within Thai territory. The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the affected border areas later today to monitor the situation and support injured personnel.

Defence Minister Gen. Natthaphon Narkphanich and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow confirmed the NSC's resolution, emphasizing the government's commitment to fully protecting Thai sovereignty and the lives of its soldiers.

Foreign Minister Sihasak stated the recent incidents constitute a clear violation of the agreement. Thailand has issued a formal protest to Cambodia, will follow up with a written complaint, and plans to protest the use of landmines under the framework of the Ottawa Convention.

Furthermore, Thailand will explain the necessity of the suspension to international witnesses of the declaration, including the United States and Malaysia, and clarify the facts to the global community. -819 (TNA)
