SIU Chief: Bahrain established comprehensive rights framework, independent accountability mechanisms

Geneva, Nov. 22 (BNA): Mohammed Khalid Al Hazza, Acting Attorney General and Head of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), participated in the review of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s fourth national report before the United Nations Committee Against Torture, held on November 18 and 19 at the UN Office in Geneva. The session was chaired by Nawaf bin Mohammed Al Maawda, Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Waqf, with the participation of representatives from relevant national institutions.


 

Al Hazza said Bahrain has established a comprehensive human rights framework grounded in justice, transparency, and accountability. He noted that the Kingdom’s approach reflects a sustained national commitment to advancing legislation and strengthening institutions responsible for protecting rights and safeguarding human dignity.


 

He highlighted the progress made by the SIU as an independent judicial mechanism, noting improvements in the Unit’s ability to address allegations of ill-treatment through professional and timely investigations. Al Hazza said these efforts have contributed to an approximate 90% reduction in related complaints and reinforced legal accountability and the rule of law.


 

He added that the SIU continues to play an integral role in protecting human rights within the criminal justice system by ensuring the independence of investigations, providing psychological and medical support to victims, and cooperating with regulatory and human rights bodies. He said such measures strengthen public confidence in national redress mechanisms.


 

Al Hazza underscored that Bahrain’s participation in the Committee’s review reflects the Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to its international obligations under the Convention Against Torture, which Bahrain ratified in 1998, and its adherence to submitting periodic reports and engaging transparently with international human rights mechanisms.
