Yusuf Islam Promotes Peace, Purpose In Malaysia Through Humanitarian Efforts

KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 (Bernama) -- Legendary British singer-songwriter Yusuf Islam, previously known as Cat Stevens, may have found fame through timeless hits and poetic lyrics, but today his message is centred on peace, purpose, and service to humanity.

Now spending more time in Malaysia, the 77-year-old artist said the country has become a meaningful base for both reflection and future initiatives, particularly in promoting a more balanced and hopeful global narrative.

Beyond music, Yusuf remains deeply involved in humanitarian and educational efforts through initiatives, including schools, foundations, and a youth creative centre in the United Kingdom (UK) inspired by the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim.

He said the centre, known as ‘The Maqam’, is envisioned as a creative hub and meeting point for people of different backgrounds and faiths.

“We call it the Maqam, and the Maqam comes from where Abraham stood when he built the house of God in Makkah.

“We believe in Abraham as being the father of all the religions and (there is) so much that unites us and does not divide us. So that's one of the big projects we have in the UK at the moment,” he told Bernama here, today.

Yusuf said through his Peace Train initiative, named after one of his iconic songs, his mission continues to focus on feeding people and spreading peace, values he drew from the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

In Malaysia, apart from being involved in charity works, Yusuf said he has been engaging with stakeholders, including the media and the Ministry of Communications, to explore how the country can help shape a more constructive narrative for the world.

For younger Malaysians searching for direction in life, Yusuf offered simple but profound advice rooted in gratitude and self-awareness.

“Forget about what you lost, think about what you’ve got. Don’t think about what is outside of your powers. Deal with what you have, and you’ll rise.

“I travelled an exciting and wonderful road to find peace through Islam. The best of people are the ones who are most beneficial for the people,” he said, quoting Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Asked about the enduring popularity of his song “Father and Son” among the younger generation on social media platforms, he said its message about change and family relationships remains timeless.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) chief executive officer Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib said Yusuf is focusing on producing and publishing meaningful stories through music and animation in Malaysia.

He said Yusuf, who now owns a studio in Malaysia, is also exploring the possibility of remaking his song “Wild World” in Malay, besides being involved in a child safety programme aimed at raising awareness on child protection.

Earlier, Yusuf had met Communication Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, his deputy Teo Nie Ching, and Azmir.

Yusuf, born as Steven Demetre Georgiou in London in 1948, is a British singer-songwriter who became one of the most influential artists of the 1970s with hits like “Moon Shadow,” “Peace Train,” “Oh Very Young,” and “Father and Son”.
