Russia backs RI's nuclear ambitions as Putin meets Prabowo in Kremlin

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged support for Indonesia’s plans to develop nuclear energy during talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Kremlin in Moscow on Wednesday.
Prabowo met Putin as part of a state visit that followed his stop in Islamabad, Pakistan. It was his second meeting with the Russian leader since taking office, after a visit to St. Petersburg in June 2025.
“We have very good prospects in energy, including nuclear power. I know your country has plans, and we are always ready to assist,” Putin said in remarks broadcast Thursday on the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.
Putin said Russia also aims to deepen cooperation with Indonesia in industry and agriculture, describing the sectors as key drivers of economic growth for both countries.
“We have many interesting projects in industrial and agricultural sectors,” he said.
The Russian president highlighted defense ties as another pillar of the relationship, calling Indonesia a longstanding partner in military and technical cooperation.
He noted that many Indonesian defense specialists have trained in Russia and that both countries maintain active exchanges between their defense ministries.
“Indonesian specialists regularly attend programs at our universities, including military academies, and we are ready to expand this cooperation,” Putin said.
He also pointed to growing people‑to‑people links, particularly in tourism, supported by direct flights and more flexible visa arrangements.
Putin welcomed Indonesia’s full membership in BRICS, calling it a significant geopolitical development, and said negotiations were continuing on a potential free‑trade agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union.
Earlier in the meeting, Putin conveyed condolences over recent floods in North Sumatra, Aceh, and West Sumatra, and expressed Russia’s support for affected communities.
Prabowo said his visit underscored the strength of Indonesia–Russia relations.
“My visit was initially meant for consultations, but now it is to express gratitude. Relations between Russia and Indonesia are at a very good level,” he said.
He noted that bilateral ties have advanced steadily throughout the year, which marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Prabowo added that Indonesia has hosted several Russian delegations in recent months, including senior officials and business leaders, resulting in what he described as productive discussions.
