Samsung develops industry's fastest UFS 5.0 memory for on-device AI

SEOUL, June 23 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Tuesday it has developed the industry's fastest Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 solution, designed to enable artificial intelligence (AI) models to run directly on devices without requiring a network connection.

The South Korean tech giant said the next-generation UFS 5.0 memory, which is expected to be used as a storage solution in smartphones and other mobile devices, delivers industry-leading performance.

"In the era of on-device AI, storage devices are evolving into a key driver defining AI experiences," Choi Jang-seok, head of memory product planning at Samsung Electronics, said in a press release.

Mass production is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, the company said.

Samsung Electronics said the development sets a new benchmark for the next-generation mobile memory market.

Generative AI is rapidly shifting from the cloud to devices, driving a sharp increase in the amount of data that must be processed locally.

As a result, storage is evolving from a medium primarily used to store data into core infrastructure that supports AI computing.

UFS 5.0 memory's enhanced performance is expected to significantly reduce latency and improve response times for users running large language models (LLMs) in on-device AI environments, the company said.
