Al-Sudani and Guterres Affirm Continued Iraq–UN Partnership Despite UNAMI Mission’s End

Baghdad/NINA/- Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani affirmed his appreciation for the UN Secretary-General's stances regarding Iraq.

In a press conference with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the Prime Minister stated that Iraq emerged victorious over terrorism thanks to the sacrifices of its people.

He added that the end of the UNAMI mission does not signify the end of the partnership with Iraq, emphasizing that the relationship with UNAMI remains pivotal.

The Prime Minister affirmed that the recent parliamentary elections were the most organized to date.

He said: "We look forward to establishing relations with the United Nations on a balanced basis."

The Prime Minister added: "During this critical period in the region and the world, we adopted a balanced policy."

He continued: "We appreciate the selection of former President Barham Salih as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees."

Al-Sudani announced the naming of a street in Baghdad “the United Nations” street.

For his part, UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that Iraq today is a different country, one of security and stability.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, he said that Iraq is a land of civilization and history, expressing his pleasure at being in the capital, Baghdad.

The UN Secretary-General congratulated Iraq on the success of its parliamentary elections. 

For his part, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that Iraq today is a different country, one of security and safety.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, he said that Iraq is a land of civilization and history.

He added, "Iraq is a land of civilization, history, and humanity, and we have witnessed its courage, steadfastness, and determination in deveating terrorism, foreign interference, and sectarianism." He noted that "we appreciate Iraq's commitment to repatriating its citizens from al-Hol camp."

Guterres congratulated Iraq on "the successful holding of the recent elections," expressing his hope that "the Iraqi government will rebuild trust and stability in the country."

He explained that "UNAMI in Iraq helped in reconstruction after decades of war, and our goal was to support Iraq in its efforts to restore stability." He pointed out that "with the closure of the mission, vital development and human resources agencies will remain, and we stand with Iraq to build a prosperous and stable country." /End
