MARRIOTT SECURITY SUPERVISOR TALKED TO SUSPECTED BOMBER
Jakarta, July 18 (ANTARA) - The JW Marriott Hotel's security supervisor, Didik Achmad Taufik (39), who survived Friday's bombing, talked with the suspected bomber moments before the explosion.
Didik, who was wounded in the bombing, said at the Jakarta Hospital on Saturday he had occasion to exchange a few words with a man carrying a backpack on his chest and lugging a suitcase toward the hotel's lounge moments before the explosion.
He said at about 7.30 on Friday morning he talked to the man who was wearing a black windbreaker and baseball cap walking awkwardly into the hotel's restaurant before the blast about 30 minutes later.
"What can I do for you?", Didik asked the mysterious man who said he wanted to meet his boss.
Didik further asked, "Who is your boss and where is he?" Without mentioning his boss's name, the man said: "I want to deliver what my boss ordered."
Because the mysterious man wanted to deliver something to his boss, the JW Marriott security supervisor did not ask further questions and in accordance with hotel rules asked a security guard, Dadang, to accompany the man to meet his boss.
"But unluckily a few minutes after that I heard an explosion and was hit by debris from the ceiling but I managed to run out of the hotel and activated the siren," Didik said.
According to Didik, it turned out the suspected bombers was a Marriott Hotel guest who had been staying in Room 1508 since June 15, 2009. He had apparently assembled the bomb inside his hotel room.
Didik said the man could have brought the bomb materials into his room little by little to avoid detection.
"Since he brought the bomb materials little by little, it was difficult for hotel security officers to detect his activity," Didik said, adding that if the man had brought the bomb from outside into the hotel, hotel security would no doubt have detected it.***
