MU PLAY IN JAKARTA WILL SEND MOST POWERFUL MESSAGE
By Mohd Nasir Yusoff
JAKARTA, July 18 (Bernama) -– Manchester United (MU), which cancelled its
July 20 match in Jakarta after Friday's bombing incidents, should stick to its
schedule to send a most powerful message to the world.
Indonesian presidential spokesman Dr Dino Patti Djalal said: "MU needs to
show that they are with us, not just in words, but in deeds.
"There is no more powerful message to the world than to continue with the
Jakarta match as planned," he said in his short message service (SMS) received
here.
"Of all the great feats that have been and will be achieved by MU as
a great football team with a heart, this one -- proceeding with the match in
Jakarta as a measure of solidarity -- will truly inspire their fans and will be
long remembered in history."
Apart from sending the message to British media and several international
news wires, it was also sent to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, through
Indonesian Ambassador to Britain Yuri Oktavian Thamrin.
The SMS, almost an appeal for MU to re-consider the decision and play its
match with the Indonesian XI at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium here, started on a
very positive note, "The much awaited football game in Jakarta on July 20 does
take place and is not cancelled."
Meanwhile, local press reported that Indonesia's local organiser for the
match was making a last-ditch effort yesterday to ensure the match be played as
planned as more than 75,000 tickets had been sold to MU's ardent fans.
Head of the local organiser, Agum Gumelar, reportedly has left for Kuala
Lumpur where MU will be playing with the Malaysian team today, to discuss with
MU chief executive David Gill on the possibility, however slight it may be, for
MU to play the scheduled match in Jakarta.
A local organiser team member TB Adi said if security was the main reason,
then an alternative would be for MU to just fly in, leave the airport for the
stadium, play the match and fly off immediately after, without having to put up
the night in Jakarta.
The Ritz Carlton Hotel where the MU team was supposed to be staying at while
here, was one of the two targets of yesterday's bombing which claimed eight
lives, including those of the two suicide bombers.
