Umm Radhuma's Ancient Wells and Stone Ruins Reflect Northern Borders' Historical Legacy

Rafha, July 05, 2026, SPA -- East of Rafha Governorate in Northern Borders Region, the historic area of Umm Radhuma retains archaeological and architectural landmarks that document patterns of human settlement in the desert environment, including ancient stone wells, rock formations, and the remains of stone-built structures.
Researcher and Antiquities Association member Abdulrahman Al-Tuwaijri told an SPA reporter that the area contains numerous circular stone-lined wells, which helped stabilize human settlements, support passing caravans, and provide a permanent water source for Bedouin inhabitants across successive historical periods.
The site's rock formations feature sequential sedimentary layers and color gradients shaped by natural erosion, reflecting the region's distinct geological characteristics.
Al-Tuwaijri added that Umm Radhuma is among the oldest villages in northern Saudi Arabia, and its name is linked to the Umm Radhuma geological formation, whose layers date to the Paleocene and Eocene epochs, giving the site scientific value alongside its historical significance.
