Thailand, Malaysia to open two border trade checkpoints to boost connectivity

PUTRAJAYA, July 9 (TNA) — The prime ministers of Thailand and Malaysia have agreed to accelerate border infrastructure development to enhance trade, tourism, and investment, with the opening of two key checkpoints scheduled for tomorrow.

Anutin Charnvirakul, Thailand’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, held a full delegation meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Office on Thursday.

Ratchada Thanadirek, spokesperson for the Thai Prime Minister’s Office, stated that both sides agreed to elevate cooperation across all dimensions to create an "area of opportunity" for economy, trade, investment, tourism, and security.

Border Connectivity and Infrastructure

A key focus of the discussion was accelerating infrastructure links to facilitate travel, reduce transport costs, and boost border trade. On Friday, both leaders will jointly open the new Sadao checkpoint and the Bukit Kayu Hitam checkpoint, which represent the highest-value border trade route between the two countries.

Beyond the highway checkpoints, the two leaders agreed to advance several key transportation projects to enhance regional logistics and travel. Among these initiatives is the resumption of ferry services between Satun province and Kuala Perlis, which will restore a vital maritime connection.

In addition to maritime links, rail connectivity will see significant upgrades through the integration of the ticketing system for the Bangkok–Hat Yai–Butterworth route into a single network. The leaders also committed to revitalizing the Sungai Kolok–Rantau Panjang railway line and constructing a new bridge, further strengthening cross-border transportation infrastructure.

Economic Goals and Agricultural Agreements

Thailand and Malaysia aim to drive bilateral trade value to a target of $30 billion in the near future. The two countries plan to link supply chains in food security, energy, and high-tech industries.

During the meeting, the leaders witnessed the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on agriculture, covering crops, livestock, fisheries, research, technology transfer, and food security. Both sides noted that outstanding trade issues regarding shrimp and seabass had been resolved by their respective agriculture ministers to assist local farmers.

Regional Security and Myanmar

On security, both nations reaffirmed cooperation to maintain peace in Thailand’s southern border provinces, agreeing that economic development and peacebuilding must progress together. Joint efforts will be increased to combat transnational crime, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and border crimes. A joint working group will also be established to manage the Golok River area and develop a bilateral flood warning system.

Additionally, the Malaysian Prime Minister commended Thailand's role regarding the situation in Myanmar. Both leaders agreed that the issue requires constructive engagement from all parties, noting Thailand’s ongoing humanitarian assistance and efforts to address instability along its border.

The Thai Prime Minister invited his Malaysian counterpart for an official visit to Thailand ahead of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2027. -819 (TNA)
