Feats Performed by Fighters in Wolmi Islet
Pyongyang, July 12 (KCNA) -- Recorded in the history of the Fatherland Liberation War is the feats of the soldiers of the Korean People's Army who fought for Wolmi Islet, a small one in the West Sea.
The U.S. imperialists, who had been driven to a narrow area along the coastline of the South Sea by the successive strikes of the People's Army, dispatched the army of the ground, naval and air forces of the U.S. which had been deployed in the direction of the Pacific and some of the U.S. Mediterranean Fleet, more troops of their ground forces in the mainland and armies of satellite countries to the Korean War in order to realize their aggressive purpose at any cost.
While attempting to wage "general offensive" on the line of the Rakdong River with increased troops, they conducted large-scale Inchon landing operation.
In mid-September 1950, a fierce battle was fought between a coast artillery company with four artillery pieces and an infantry company of the Korean People's Army and about 1 000 planes, hundreds of warships and more than 50 000 troops of the U.S. imperialists in Wolmi Islet, which has an area of 0.66 square kilometers with a coastline of only 4 kilometers in the waters off Inchon.
The U.S. imperialists turned the islet into a sea in flames through indiscriminate bombing and naval bombardment, but the defenders of Wolmi Islet did not vacillate or withdraw. When shells were out of stock and even the last artillery was destroyed, the defenders smashed the enemy's tanks with anti-tank grenades and wiped out the enemies with hand-to-hand battle.
The brave soldiers in Wolmi Islet made a great contribution to implementing the strategic policy of the second stage of the war set forth by President Kim Il Sung by sinking and destroying 13 warships of various kinds including three destroyers of the enemies in the three-day battle.
The feats performed by them who worked miracles in the world history of wars are shining in the memory of the country and people generation after generation. -0-
