Action urged to prevent recurring Thai venue fires

BAGNKOK, July 13 (TNA) - The president of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association stated that the time for "lessons learned" is over and immediate action is required to prevent recurring entertainment venue fires.
He recommended amending a 2012 ministerial regulation to cover venues both inside and outside designated zoning areas.
Amorn Pimanmas, president of the association, commented on last night's fire at an entertainment venue in the Lat Phrao area, noting similarities to a major nightclub fire in 2009. He pointed out the use of highly flammable decorative materials, specifically foam, which acted as fuel. Another factor was overcrowding; legally, occupancy and fire exits must be calculated based on the floor space.
Following last night's incident, Amorn believes that forensic investigations into electrical systems, fire exits, smoke ventilation, and occupant numbers will reveal the exact cause of the casualties.
He noted that the 2012 Ministerial Regulation on Entertainment Venues was enacted after the 2009 Santika Pub fire, but it only applies within specific zones. As the economy grew, entertainment venues emerged outside these zones, often bypassing stricter rules by registering as restaurants with live music. Consequently, regulation is less stringent. Amorn suggested expanding the scope of the regulation to cover establishments outside the zones.
He concluded that adhering to standards—using fire-retardant decorations, installing protected electrical systems, ensuring proper ventilation, and limiting occupancy—would prevent such tragedies.
"It is time to stop drawing lessons and start taking action, because this is a recurring problem that should not happen again," Amorn said.
"The death toll from last night’s venue fire stands at 27, while the number of injured has risen to 71. - 819 (TNA)
