Justice ministry appoints deputy prosecutor general

SEOUL, July 19 (Yonhap) -- The Justice Ministry said Sunday it has promoted Cha
Dong-min, chief of the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office, to the post of deputy
prosecutor general as part of its move to minimize a leadership vacuum in the
prosecution.
Public concern has mounted about the prosecution's leadership vacuum following
the resignation last week of President Lee Myung-bak's nominee for the country's
next prosecutor general, Chun Sung-gwan, amid allegations of his corruption.
Former prosecutor general Lim Chae-jin resigned in the middle of June in the wake
of the death of former president Roh Moo-hyun, who was grilled by prosecutors
over his suspected bribery. Lim's deputies and other top-ranking prosecution
officials also stepped down in late June, after President Lee nominated Chun,
then chief of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, as Lim's successor.
The ministry said Cha is expected to act as prosecutor general until the
president appoints a new prosecution chief.
