Car bomb hits police station in southern Thailand, one injured

NARATHIWAT, July 22 (TNA) - A car bomb exploded outside a police station in Thailand’s southern province of Narathiwat on Tuesday evening, injuring one officer and causing widespread damage, authorities said.

Security camera footage showed a driver steering a grey Mitsubishi Lancer with fake plates toward the old Tanyong Police Station before jumping out and fleeing on a waiting motorcycle. An improvised explosive device weighing over 70 kilograms, hidden inside gas cylinders, was then detonated via remote control. The blast injured a police sergeant on duty and destroyed a nearby vehicle.

Investigators traced the car to an owner who holds two active 2025 arrest warrants for a shooting, a bombing, and a gold shop robbery in the region. 

Police have identified a suspect, though he evaded arrest during a raid in Mueang Narathiwat district.

Regional police officials and the provincial governor inspected the site on Wednesday. Authorities believe the attack was carried out by an insurgent group responsible for three previous similar bombings aimed at creating unrest in the area. -819 (TNA)
