Glasgow 2026: Heartbreak For Malaysia As Wales Snatch Victory From Jaws Of Defeat

GLASGOW, July 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s national men’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss in their opening Group B match of the 2026 Commonwealth Games here today when Wales snatched victory by a single point in the last minute.

Muhamad Atib Zakaria, Muhammad Roozaimi Johari and Freday Tan were just moments from celebrating their win as each team had traded the lead throughout the match when the Welsh team of Ben Johnson-Rolfe, Dan May and Alexander Marshall-Wilson managed to end the match 14-13 in their favour.

“Obviously we want to win our first match, but it wasn’t our day. The last shot didn’t happen, so we will focus on the next two matches against Scotland and South Africa.

“Our chance of advancing is still there. The group winner will qualify directly to the semifinal, while the second and third-placed teams will play in the quarterfinals,” he said when met by Bernama after the match at Scottish Event Campus here on Sunday.

Muhamad Atib, who scored 10 points in today’s match, said that the team would need to improve their communication in the next two games, especially when trying to score, so they wouldn’t be rushed in the last moments.

“I think today we were just unlucky, but I’m convinced we will rise again in the next matches,” he added.
Malaysia will play Scotland and South Africa next Monday (July 27).
