AUSTRALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER VISITS JAKARTA BOMBING SITES
Jakarta, July 19 (ANTARA) - Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith visited the scenes of Friday's bombings of JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in Mega Kuningan area, South Jakarta, on Sunday.
The Australian foreign minister observed the sites of the bomb blasts which ruined sections of the hotels and killed nine persons and injured more than 50 others.
Smith did not spend too much time in his visit to the locations. He was accompanied by a number of security officers. Smith expressed his condolences to the dead victims' bereaved families and to the injured victims.
After inspecting the bombing sites, the Australian foreign minister and his entourage left the location.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ordered the security authorities to immediately conduct a comprehensive investigation of the bombing attacks at the two five-star Jakarta hotels.
Head of the National Police's Public Relations Division Inspector General Nanang Sukarna said six people were killed on the spot at the JW Marriott Hotel and two at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, while one died at Medistra Hospital.
Many countries, including the United States, have condemned Friday's bomb attacks in Jakarta.
US President Barack Obama also condemned the bomb attacks on JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in Jakarta.
"I strongly condemn the attacks that occurred this morning in Jakarta, and extend my deepest condolences to all the victims and their loved ones." Obama said on Friday.
He said that the American people stood by the Indonesian people in this difficult time, and the U.S. government stood ready to help the Indonesian government respond to and recover from these outrageous attacks as a friend and partner.
The foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Saturday also denounced the Jakarta bomb attacks and backed the Indonesian government's efforts to fight terrorism.
"The ASEAN foreign ministers strongly condemn the bombings in Jakarta on 17 July 2009, which caused the loss of innocent lives and injuries," the statement said.***4
