Thai PM Visits ASEAN Secretariat, Reaffirms Support for Regional Growth

JAKARTA, Aug 4 (TNA) - Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta during an official visit to Indonesia.

Upon arrival, the Prime Minister planted a commemorative tree, signed the guestbook, and took part in a photo session.

The Prime Minister affirmed Thailand's commitment to a unified ASEAN and its readiness to support the Secretariat across all areas. He added that he plans to attend the ASEAN Summit in Manila late this year and noted that Thailand will host Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing later this week.

Secretary-General Kao praised the visit for reinforcing Thailand's regional role and confirmed ASEAN's support for Thailand’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2028. He emphasized that strong political will from leaders is crucial during ASEAN's current transition to promote peace and stability.

Regarding Thai-Cambodian relations, the Prime Minister stated that Thailand adheres to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) framework for bilateral talks. He expressed disappointment over Cambodia’s decision to opt for non-binding Compulsory Conciliation.

The Secretary-General expressed understanding, underscored the need for ASEAN unity, and voiced hope for improved relations between the two neighboring nations. -819 (TNA)
