PM Anwar Extends Condolences Over Colombia Earthquake

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister  Anwar Ibrahim has expressed condolences to the families of victims of the devastating earthquake that struck western Colombia on Monday. 

 

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Anwar said Malaysia stood in solidarity with the people of Colombia following the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake, which has killed more than 100 people and caused widespread destruction.

 

“I was saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake that struck western Colombia yesterday, the most powerful to strike the country in decades.

 

“On behalf of the Government and people of Malaysia, I extend our condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives, and our sympathies to all those affected,” he posted.

 

Anwar also paid tribute to rescue workers and volunteers involved in the ongoing search for survivors amid continuing aftershocks.

 

“Malaysia stands in solidarity with the people of Colombia at this difficult time. We pay tribute to the rescue workers and volunteers who continue to search for survivors amid continuing aftershocks, and pray for the swift recovery of the injured and the safe location of those still missing.

 

“We join the international community in wishing the Colombian people strength and resilience in the days ahead,” he said.

 

The earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, with its epicentre in the Chocó region, causing extensive damage in several areas including Cali, Pereira and Manizales.
