Method of Grilling Korean-Style Steak - Intangible Cultural Heritage of DPRK
Pyongyang, August 12 (KCNA) -- From olden times, steak, one of the three favorite foods of the Korean people, had been widely known to other countries as "Maekjok" (Korean-style steak).
Maekjok means steak eaten by the Maekjok tribe (original inhabitants of the state of Koguryo) who had existed in ancient times of Korea.
Typical of the Korean steak is beefsteak.
It has been well known for its peculiar taste from olden times as it is prepared by grilling tasty Korean beef seasoned with garlic and sesame oil over charcoal fire.
The method of grilling steak was further developed in the period of Koguryo (B.C. 277-A.D. 668). Therefore, "Maekjok" was once called Koguryo-style steak.
Its kinds were more diversified and the cuisine was developed in the period of Koryo (918-1392) and the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910).
Among the steaks of the DPRK, beefsteak grilled over charcoal fire has been well known to the world.
The method of grilling Korean-style steak was registered as a part of the national intangible cultural heritage in November 2015. -0-
