Indonesia achieves self-sufficiency in eight food commodities: Prabowo

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto said on Friday that Indonesia had achieved self-sufficiency in eight food commodities over the past year as part of efforts to strengthen national food security.

The eight commodities are rice, corn, table sugar, industrial sugar, garlic, beef, buffalo meat, and soybeans, he said.

Prabowo made the statement during the State of the Nation Address at the 2026 Annual Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Joint Session of the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) in Jakarta.

However, Prabowo acknowledged that Indonesia had yet to achieve self-sufficiency in some commodities, including garlic, with the government targeting self-sufficiency in the commodity within three years.

“We have not yet achieved self-sufficiency in garlic; we are striving to reach that goal within three years,” Prabowo said.

He also noted that Indonesia had yet to achieve self-sufficiency in beef and buffalo meat. However, he said the country's protein needs were generally being met through other food sources.

“Fundamentally, we have actually achieved self-sufficiency in protein—specifically protein from fish, eggs, and chicken,” he said.

Prabowo attributed progress in food self-sufficiency to the hard work of various parties and expressed special appreciation to those who had contributed to strengthening national food security.

“Today, I have already expressed special appreciation to those who worked hard to enable us to achieve this food self-sufficiency,” Prabowo said.

The 2026 Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD were held on Friday as part of events marking the 81st anniversary of Indonesia's independence.

The sessions were held under the theme “A Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia.”
