Songdan - Scenic Spot in DPRK

Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- There is a vast pine forest along the beach in Riwon County, South Hamgyong Province, the DPRK. The forest is well-known to our people as a scenic spot called Songdan.
According to historical data, there was no pine tree there, so the area was badly affected by the sea wind and its conditions were unfavorable for the farming. The local residents planted young pine trees on the white beach and took good care of them to create a windbreak forest. Later a beautiful pine forest was created there.
The forest was greatly damaged due to the Japanese imperialists' colonial rule in the last century.
President Kim Il Sung visited the then Songdan-ri in Riwon County in August 1949. He said that the scenery of Songdan is really beautiful and that it is picturesque as it has sea at the front and high or low mountains at the back. He said that Japanese imperialists cut down many pine trees on the white beach, which damaged the beautiful scenery, adding that pine trees should be planted there to make it more beautiful.
Songdan has become a resort for the working people.
In Songdan there is a rest center, where many visitors are now having a good time. -0-
