Sbai & Denim: Pop Star Kratae Sparks ‘Thai Core’ Fashion Trend

BANGKOK, Feb 6 (TNA) - Traditional Thai aesthetics are undergoing a modern revival as "Sbai" shawls paired with denim jeans dominate social media feeds across Facebook and TikTok.
The trend, fueled by pop icon Kratae Rsiam and the appointment of global superstar Lisa as a tourism ambassador, is being hailed as a significant boost for Thailand’s "Soft Power."
THE ‘BANGKOK CITY’ PHENOMENON
While the mix of traditional textiles and denim has appeared in the past, the current craze was ignited by Kratae’s latest hit, “Bangkok City.” The music video’s visual identity has inspired influencers and celebrities to replicate the look.

"I tried to incorporate my Thai identity to show the world that our culture is beautiful," Kratae Rsiam (Nipaporn Boonyaliang) told reporters. "It’s a joy to see everyone from stars to fans joining in. They aren't doing it for me; they’re doing it to say, ‘My country’s Sbai is gorgeous.’"

The garment at the heart of this trend is the Queen Sirikit-style Sbai, part of the national costumes initiated by Her Majesty the late Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. The trend breathes new life into Her Majesty's vision of Thai silk as a versatile, timeless fabric for all ages.

STREET STYLE MEETS TRADITION
On the streets of Bangkok, the youth-led movement is blending heritage with practicality.
"The top is traditional with accessories, but the bottom is just jeans," said one young fan spotted filming content. "It’s an ancient style adapted for modern fashion. It makes Thailand look cool and interesting."
LISA AND THE GLOBAL LINK
The "Thai Core" movement recently received a massive global boost. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) officially named Lisa (Lalisa Manobal) as its "Amazing Thailand Ambassador."
Beyond the aesthetic, the trend is driving a surge in "fashion tourism," as locals and foreigners alike flock to historic landmarks to capture the perfect "Sbai and Denim" shot.

Lisa made a striking debut as ambassador in a radiant golden ensemble, which fashion experts analyzed as a modern interpretation of the legendary work of Pierre Balmain. The world-renowned designer made fashion history in 1960 by creating the iconic royal wardrobes for the late Queen Mother. This appearance serves as a seamless bridge, blending global high fashion with the spiritual essence of Thai culture.
