Iran, Tajikistan presidents discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation
Tehran, IRNA – President Masoud Pezeshkian and his Tajik counterpart, Emomali Rahmon, have discussed the current status of bilateral relations and mutual cooperation and explored ways to strengthen joint interaction.
On the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and SCO Plus Summit on Monday, Pezeshkian and Rahmon met in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
Reviewing the latest developments and trends of cooperation between Tehran and Dushanbe, the two sides emphasized the need to utilize the existing capacities to develop and deepen relations between the two countries in various fields.
Referring to the profound historical, cultural, and civilizational connections between Iran and Tajikistan, Pezeshkian said that the love and affection shared by the officials and people of both nations extend beyond typical diplomatic relations. These strong ties serve as a valuable foundation for further strengthening the relations between the two countries, he added.
The president congratulated Tajikistan on its independence anniversary and appreciated the Tajik president’s presence along with the high-ranking Tajik delegation at the ceremony honoring the martyred leader.
Pezeshkian also expressed his gratitude to the Tajik government for its principled and consistent support of the Islamic Republic of Iran, noting that while the current relations between Iran and Tajikistan are strong, there is significant potential for further expansion and deepening of their ties.
The president stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to pursue any measure aimed at expanding political, economic, scientific, cultural, and other areas of cooperation between the two countries.
Referring to the documents and memoranda of understanding signed between Iran and Tajikistan, Pezeshkian said that Iran would seriously follow up on the full and proper implementation of the agreements and memoranda.
For his part, Rahmon emphasized the deep-rooted historical, civilizational, and cultural ties between the two countries and peoples, noting that Iran and Tajikistan have considerable potential for strengthening and expanding bilateral cooperation.
The Tajik president highlighted the positive progress in bilateral cooperation and emphasized the importance of continuing diplomatic exchanges.
Rahmon noted that there is significant potential for enhancing cooperation between the two countries in areas such as transportation, trade, and other economic sectors.
The 26th Summit of heads of state of the SCO kicked off in Bishkek on August 31 and will run through September 1, as Kyrgyzstan is the organization’s periodic chair in 2026.
