FM From Munich, Stresses the Importance of Intensifying Diplomatic Efforts to Avoid Further Tensions in the Region

Baghdad / NINA /- Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein underscored the importance of intensifying diplomatic efforts and prioritizing dialogue to prevent further tensions in the region, stressing the sensitivity of the current phase and the need for responsible regional and international engagement.
His remarks came during his participation on Friday in a roundtable discussion titled “Paths to Peace: The Growing Role of Gulf States in Conflict Resolution,” held on the sidelines of the 2026 Munich Security Conference, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Hussein reviewed developments in Iraq’s political landscape, particularly the progress of the electoral process and the constitutional steps related to government formation. He emphasized the need to consolidate political stability and strengthen constitutional institutions in support of the country’s democratic trajectory.
Addressing regional developments, the foreign minister pointed to the possibility of escalation or the continuation of negotiations between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. He noted that the entire region is closely watching the outcome of these talks, given the risks of renewed escalation and potential military confrontation should negotiations fail.
Hussein highlighted the sensitivity of the current stage, calling for intensified diplomatic engagement and the primacy of dialogue to avert further instability.
The roundtable was organized by the Gulf Research Center in cooperation with the International Crisis Group, bringing together foreign and defense ministers from various countries, as well as representatives of major international companies and experts in political and security affairs.
Discussions focused on key themes, including the future trajectories of Gulf diplomacy, coordination mechanisms with regional and international actors, crisis management approaches, and an assessment of the effectiveness of the Gulf role amid rapid transformations in the international system./ End
