Bangkok Halts Rama IX Data Center, Pauses Large Projects Over Safety Review

BANGKOK, Sept 2 (TNA) — Bangkok authorities have suspended permits for a data center project in the Rama IX area following public complaints over fuel odors, while temporarily delaying approvals for future large-scale projects to review environmental and safety standards.

Energy officials inspecting the 12,249-square-meter site—approved for construction as a warehouse, electronic data center, and office space—found that 200,000 liters of diesel fuel stored on-site for backup power had been moved off the premises, with authorities preparing legal action for unauthorized operations.

Huai Khwang District Director Sombat Khrueakiratitham previously led an inspection after residents reported fumes spreading through local drainage systems near residential zones and hospitals.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced the wider suspension alongside energy and water officials, citing the need to update legal frameworks, noise controls, and environmental impact rules.

 Officials clarified that existing data center operations have not negatively affected local electricity or public water supplies, with the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority noting usage remains well below that of hospitals and shopping malls.

Authorities are also investigating reports of unauthorized fuel storage at a separate site in Ramkhamhaeng as part of the broader regulatory review. - 819 (TNA)
